Paul Rowland knows the language of beauty inside out, which means he's able to subvert its vocabulary.

In a blockbuster 96-page supplement to V61, Rowland and his collaborators spin through the wild and untamed worlds of Women and Supreme, presenting an ode to 21st-century beauty.

"Joel-Peter Witkin, paganism, mysticism, vampires, witches—all the things I love," Rowland explains of his inspiration.

The result is some of the rawest and most personal imagery around, as seen through the lens of Rowland (who shot these covers, plus a beautifully haunting fashion story) and his co-conspirators: art photographers Hanna Liden, Richard Kern, and Katy Grannan, each of whom take a turn dressing and undressing the sister agencies' top mannequins.

Rowland, whose lavish and intricate agency show packages are the talk of the industry each season, has a creative verve that extends beyond model agency moving and shaking, and into photography and fine art.

V Magazine Special Edition: The World of Women/Supreme is available in select cities with V61, on newsstands September 1, 2009.
